1.8T oil sludge / oil gelling. Undersized oil drainback passages plus conventional oil and long intervals let sludge form, starving the turbo and bearings and destroying the engine. VW issued an extended warranty and settlement covering 1.8T engines from roughly 1997-2004.

Ignition 2001-2005

Ignition coil pack failure causing sudden misfire and limp mode; multiple VW recall and extended-coverage campaigns.

Body

Window regulator cable failure — the glass drops into the door. Extremely high-frequency complaint.

Engine (W8) 2002-2004

W8 timing chain and chain tensioner complexity with very high repair cost and low parts availability; four camshaft chains driven off the crank.
