Privacy
What this site collects, and what it does not.
What we collect
This site is a set of static pages. It has no accounts, no logins, no comment system and no newsletter, and it never asks you for personal information.
The hosting provider keeps standard server request logs (page requested, referrer, approximate location, browser type) for security and to see which pages are used.
Analytics
This site uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages are read. It records the page you viewed, where you arrived from, your approximate location derived from your IP address, and your browser and device type. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. We never see your name, your email or anything that identifies you personally, and we do not try to.
Outside the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Analytics sets its own cookies to tell a returning visit from a new one. Inside those regions, analytics storage is switched off by default, so no analytics cookie is set at all.
You can block Analytics everywhere with Google's official opt-out browser add-on, or by using any browser setting or extension that blocks it. The site works exactly the same either way.
What your browser loads
Besides this domain, your browser contacts two outside services on the pages of this site:
- Google Analytics 4, the visit counter described above. Your browser fetches it from
www.googletagmanager.com, and it reports togoogle-analytics.com. - Google AdSense, the advertising code, plus Google's own check on the quality of the traffic it sees. Your browser fetches it from
pagead2.googlesyndication.com, and it contactsadtrafficquality.google. It may keep a small setting of its own in your browser's local storage.
Besides these, the hosting provider keeps the standard server request logs described above.
Advertising
No advertisement is shown on this site yet, and the Google AdSense code already loads on every page except the “page not found” error page. Google needs that code in place to review the site before any advertisement can appear. From the first page you open, Google is told your IP address, your browser and which page you are on, whether or not an advertisement ever appears.
Ads on this site are requested as non-personalized everywhere: they are chosen by the page you are reading, not by a profile of you. Advertising storage on this site's own pages is switched off by default through Google's consent mode. Even non-personalized ads rely on technology of their own: once advertisements appear, Google, as a third-party vendor, and the advertising partners it works with may set and read cookies and use web beacons and similar technologies inside the advertisement frames and on their own domains, for frequency capping, aggregated ad reporting and to detect fraud and abuse.
Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland see either no advertisements or Google's limited ads, which are not personalized and for which Google uses cookies and local storage only to detect invalid traffic and fraud. No consent banner is shown here because advertising storage stays off and ads are non-personalized. If personalized advertising is ever switched on, a consent choice will appear before it, and this page will say so first.
How Google uses information from sites that use its services, including this one, is explained at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
You can turn off personalized advertising from Google at adssettings.google.com, and from many other vendors at optout.aboutads.info.
US state privacy rights
Residents of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and other states with comprehensive privacy laws have rights to access, correct and delete personal information, and to opt out of its sale or of targeted advertising. This site does not sell personal information. It shows no advertisements yet, and the advertising code it loads requests non-personalized ads only, so nothing here is used to target an advertisement at you. If personalized advertising is ever switched on, it counts as sharing or targeted advertising under those laws, and an opt-out will be published here before it starts. To exercise a right or ask what is held, write to hello@mileagecurve.com.
Data about vehicles
The vehicle data shown here comes from public NHTSA records. NHTSA removes the identity of the person who filed, but complaint narratives are free text and can name other people or businesses. Quotes published here are screened for names, phone numbers and street addresses before they appear. Nothing on this site is keyed to an individual, an address or a vehicle identification number. If a quote still carries identifying detail, tell us and it comes down.
