1ZZ-FE excessive oil consumption. The early 1ZZ-FE piston has a low-tension oil ring with too few and too small oil-return holes in the ring land; the holes coke over, the ring stops scraping, and the engine burns oil, sometimes a quart per 1,000 miles or worse. Toyota revised the piston design later in the engine's life.
