1.6L EcoBoost: if coolant level drops, the cylinder head overheats, cracks and leaks oil onto hot exhaust components, causing underhood fires. Ford ran successive campaigns (12S45, 13S12, 17S09) culminating in fitting a coolant level sensor with warning logic.
1.5L EcoBoost coolant intrusion: coolant migrates from the block into the combustion chamber through the block-to-head interface, causing misfires, white smoke, coolant loss and eventual head cracking or engine failure.
