Engine — high pressure fuel pump cam follower 2006-2008 (2.0T FSI only)

The bucket-style cam follower that rides between the intake camshaft lobe and the mechanical high pressure fuel pump wears through and can be punctured, after which the pump plunger contacts and destroys the camshaft lobe, and metal debris enters the oil. Symptoms are power loss, rough running and a check-engine light. The follower is a wear item that owners must inspect periodically; the defining B7 2.0T FSI failure.

Engine — timing chain tensioner 2006-2008

Hydraulic timing chain tensioner wear on the FSI engines, permitting chain slack and, in the worst case, timing jump.

Engine — intake valve carbon deposits 2006-2008 (FSI engines)

Direct injection means no fuel washes the intake valves, so carbon accumulates and causes misfires, rough idle and power loss; requires periodic walnut-blasting.
